Live from the "Rally"

Behold the fury of the offended campus!

Behold the fury of the offended campus!

Unfortunately, I had class from 1 to 1:50 today, so I wasn’t able to see the beginning of the “Stop the Hate & Celebrate” event on the mall. However, if the attendance shortly thereafter is any kind of indicator, this “rally” turned out to be little more than a circle of about 20-25 people. Apologies for the shoddy picture, but you can’t hope for much better with a built-in computer camera from 25 ft away. The rally was scheduled to go until 3 PM, but by 2:15 the remaining stragglers had dispersed.

I hope that they’re happy, because I’m damn near thrilled. If this is the threat to the First Amendment on campus, then that Constitutional right is stronger than I’m inclined to believe.

Appearances of note were President Tommy Bruce, VP Seema Patel, and former UA Senator Zeke Gebrekidane. Even if nothing happens regarding the Wildcat, I still think that ASUA has to atone for its conduct. They have completely ignored the principle of an independent press, openly allied themselves to the Barack Obama campaign, and have entirely failed in their mission to represent all students on campus, or even a plurality of them. When people wonder why the slogan of “your student government” is treated as such a joke, this so-highly-esteemed body would do well to look at how they conducted themselves in the wake of this controversy.

Meanwhile, the fun just doesn’t stop on campus today. The usual Senate meeting at 5 PM, followed by the “FIRST EVER!” Senate Town Hall Forum at 7 PM.

What a relief. I was expecting torches and pitchforks after that memo from ASUA.
